Americans are obsessed with faces, and this includes the skull–the face beneath the face. Gravestones of earlier centuries often show a face, a death’s head, and sometimes the face of an angel. This motif is an archetypal, universally symbolic form. I look to capture creative examples of this archetypal imagery.
